Roadmap

  • December 2005: Assessment on the first 9 months usage
    • Report to Funding Institutions Scientific Committees (Michel Bidoit, Brigitte Plateau, Thierry Priol & 1 ACI Grid member)
    • Brainstorming on how to budgetize at least 500 CPUs at each of the 9 sites (1000 for Orsay) to achieve the 5000 CPUs goal (some sites are already secured)
    • Brainstorming on how to budgetize 10 Gbps interfaces for RENATER (20 k$)
  • March 2006: Organize a Grid'5000 school where users can familiarize with scheduling/deploying tools
    • Opening to ACI Masse de Données & ACI Sécurité communities for the Spring School (reach stability)
  • Mid 2006: Opening to external communities and possibly "best effort" after first users reports

What has been done so far

Financial Supports

  1. "ACI Grid" with 2 calls for Grid'5000
  2. "ACI Masse de Données" with GriD eXplorer
  3. Local fundings (regions + departments)
  4. INRIA fundings
  5. 2 "AS CNRS" (Grid5000 and Grid Programming)

Management and Internal Communication

  1. 1 Steering Committee + 1 Technical Committee
  2. Frequent audioconferences for each committee
  3. Wiki online interactive workspace
  4. Regular meetings with RENATER
  5. Public web site
  6. 1 Mailing list for each committee
  7. [...]
  • June 2005: Assessment on the first 3 months of community usage
  • November 2005: Wiki and public web site merged on a single portal

Technical Achievements

  1. Prototype:
    1. Grid prototype: 775 machines deployed over 9 sites
    2. Security prototype: operational VPN (VTUN)
    3. Control prototype: OAR
    4. Monitoring prototype: Nagios
  2. [...]
  3. Real size instrument:
    1. Grid achievement: 1041 machines (2082 CPUs) deployed over 9 sites
    2. Security achievement: dedicated VLAN (RENATER)
    3. Control achievement: OAR + KaTools
    4. Monitoring achievement: Monika, OARGantt, Ganglia, Nagios
  4. March 2005: Automated WinXP launch (delay measurment)
  5. March 2005: Real size demos (> 1000 CPU)

Partnerships

  1. 3 calls opened (CCTP written and approved by the Steering Committee)
    1. information exchange (Benchmarks, Costs, CPU availability, etc.)
  2. March 2005: 1Gb/s dedicated line between all Grid'5000 sites (RENATER)
    1. operational RENATER link for Grenoble
    2. RENATER probes available for Sophia, Grenoble, Rennes, Orsay, Toulouse (and soon Lyon)

Discussions and Brainstormings

  1. Operating modes: local clusters vs. Grid'5000
  2. User modes: shared, interactive, batch
  3. Demos: reboot, network, middleware, applications (call for permanent demos)
  4. Experiments census (and call for new proposals)

Deadlines

  • October 2004: Progressive prototype deployment following a roadmap
  • November 2004: Partial scheduling ready for SC'04 demos
  • December 2004: Switch to real equipment
  • January 2005: Opening to the full Grid'5000 community
  • March 2005: Opening to ACI Grid community as soon as possible
