Experiments

  • collective operations in component models (Programming) [achieved]
    Description: The goal is to provide a way to use collective communication operations between component instances. We also allow their implementation using software components. This is done by providing a new kind of implementation for components, a "replicating component implementation".
    Results: A preliminary evaluation shows that the performances obtained with our implementation based on CCM can be compared with those of GridMPI, they are even better in some cases.

    Abstract: {R}ecent advances in computing and networking technologies — such as multi-core processors and high bandwidth wide area networks — lead parallel infrastructures to reach a higher degree of complexity. {P}rogrammers have to face with both parallel and distributed programming paradigms when designing an application. {T}his is especially true when dealing with e-{S}cience applications. {M}oreover, as parallel processing is moving to the mainstream, it does not seem appropriate to rely on low-level solutions requiring expert knowledge. {T}his paper studies how to combine modern programming practices such as those based on software components and one of the most important parallel programming paradigms which is the well-known master-worker paradigm. {T}he goal is to provide a simple and resource transparent model while enabling an efficient utilization of resources. {T}he paper proposes a generic approach to embed the master-worker paradigm into software component models and describes how this generic approach can be implemented within an existing software component model. {T}he overall approach is validated with synthetic experiments on clusters and the {G}rid´5000 testbed.

    Abstract: {T}he size, heterogeneity and dynamism of the execution platforms of scientific applications, like computational grids, make using those platforms complex. {F}urthermore, today there is no effective and relatively simple solution to the programming of these applications independently of the target architectures. {U}sing the master-worker paradigm in software components can provide a high level abstraction of those platforms, in order to ease their programming and make these applications portable. {H}owever, this does not take into account the dynamism of these platforms, such as changes in the number of processors available or the network load. {T}herefore we propose to make the master-worker abstraction dynamically adaptable. {M}ore specifically, this paper characterizes the master-worker paradigm on distributed platforms, then describes a decision algorithm to switch between master-worker implementations at run-time.
